c. 1850 Ship Bosun’s “Persuader” Wooden Tool (blackjack) with a Turned Shaped Handle, Used, Choice Very Fine.

This wooden “Persuader” has a rum barrel-shaped head and a nice lathe-turned, shaped handle all in good original condition with a lovely natural patina. The Lignum Vitae wood surface has a nice overall patina with just a few age splits with a total length of 8.5” and the barrel-shaped head measures 1.4” wide, small enough to easily hide prior to use. Lignum Vitae wood was preferred by seamen for tools because of its dense hardwood strength and resistance to water. Naval bosun's persuaders, similar to blackjacks or saps, were used for waking up sailors and keeping sailors “in line”. Judging by the weight of this example, we could see how it would have been very persuasive.
