c. 1850 California “Gold Rush” Era, Original American Oil Painting on Canvas, Depicting Two Miners with their donkeys packing in a load of supplies, Framed, Fine.

Original Artwork, this Oil Painting measures about 20” x 28”, being housed in a deep gold gilt inner trimmed wooden frame, to fully 26” x 34”. The frame shows some age wear as shown. The Canvas Painting appears to be signed at lower right, though the painter’s name is indistinguishable to us. This California “Gold Rush” era painting depicts two miners, one carrying his rifle on his shoulder while leading their three heavily supply laden donkeys. Overall, this painting retains good rich color, though it would benefit from cleaning or minor conservation due to a small .75” long thin tear hole in the canvas on the left side. It is about an inch from the edge and about 2” in front of the lead miner shown with his rifle. Suggested is removal of an old unseen reinforcement on the reverse side of the canvass and re-stretching. California tundra appears appropriate in the hillside scene and the canvass is certainly vintage to the period.
