c. 1797 Federal Period, President John Adams Portrait Transfer, Large Historical Liverpool Creamware Pitcher With “JOHN ADAMS, President of the United States of America.” Also, “George Washington, Liberty Cap and Map Displaying the 13 Original States of the United States and more, Choice Extremely Fine.
A rare large size historical Liverpool Pitcher that measures 10.75” tall x 5.25” at its base. This design displays four black transfers. The first being a superb Portrait of John Adams, with the legend: “JOHN ADAMS, President of the United States of America.” This transfer is listed as A.4 on page 61 of David Arman’s reference book, “Anglo-American Ceramics” (1998). It displays a large central Bust Portrait of John Adams together with “Justice” on one side and “Plenty” on the other, along with a smiling Cherub at the upper center.
The second transfer is listed as W.15a on page 197 in Arman: “Washington - Map of the United States” (without footnotes). It shows General George Washington and “Liberty” standing next to a large oval Map of the United States. Benjamin Franklin, “Justice” and “America” stand on the other side of the Map, and a winged Herald is shown carrying a laurel wreath and ribbon with the name, “WASHINGTON”. Under the spout are two additional black transfers. The upper is listed as S.67 on page 178 of Arman, being “Success to America.” The lower is listed as S.12 located on page 162 of Arman, being an early example of a Seal of the United States with 15 Stars about the Heraldic American Eagle. Overall, a very clean and sharply detailed example of this important President JOHN ADAMS design. |
