(1796) Stipple Engraving Proof Impression on Card of George Washington shown in uniform facing left, captioned "G. WASHINGTON. Ne en Virginie anne 1733. Commandant en Chef des Armees et President du Congres d'Amerique.", Engraved by Louis Charles Ruotte, Paris, Crisp Extremely Fine or better.
This scarce Engraving of George Washington was published in, "Portraits des Personages Celebres de la Revolution", Vol. I (Paris 1796). Engraved by Louis Charles Ruotte, (1754-1811), after the portrait by Francois Bonneville, (active 1787-1802), who became one of the best known portrait engravers of his day. See: Hart 172 (page 79) states that this engraving is based on Joseph Wright's “Type A” likeness (1790), while Wick (page 30, Fig. 46) says it is based on the likeness by artist Pierre Eugene Du Simitiere (1779). The engraving measures 10-3/8" x 6-3/4" with a strong deep outline impression of the Copper-Plate having fully wide margins on all four sides, being sharply printed with excellent eye-appeal on heavy print cardstock and is excellent for display. |
