c. 1703 Hand-Colored Engraved Map titled “AMERICA” by Peter Heylyn, showing California as an Island, Matted, Choice Very Fine.

This early Hand-colored, Engraved Map measures 14.25” x 17” (by sight), matted to an overall size of 20” x 22.75.” Overall bright and colorful with light folds and a clean appearance, its outline colors prominent. Historic and popular design with California is shown as an Island, consistent with contemporary knowledge of this relatively unknown and unexplored region. Boldly colored outline the the title cartouche design surrounting “AMERICA” in the lower left field.

This Map of the Americas is from Heylyn's 1703 “Cosmography.” Unusual features of the map include the depiction of California as an Island (uncommon in English maps); an extended Northwest coastline with the Desolation and Zapozipin Bays; a river rising out of the Florida panhandle; and three mythical lakes in what is present day Canada: L. Aquinanbock, L. of Isles, and the very large The Great Lake of Thongo or Thoya. Provenance, Ex: Altman sale in August 1951. McLaughlin 154.
