September 7, 1797 Published Print: "GENERAL WASHINGTON: LATE PRESIDENT OF THE AMERICAN CONGRESS", Artist Unknown, Published by G. Thompson, London, Framed, Very Fine.
This exceedingly rare stunning Hand-colored Print measures about 14" tall x 9.75" wide (by sight), that has been professionally framed to the overall size of 12" wide x 16” tall (not inspected out of its frame), shown through special UV Plexiglas. Identified with a September 7, 1797 Published date, this engraving of General Washington appears to have been produced after an earlier painting of George Washington by Charles Wilson Peale. The print shows General Washington in his red and blue military uniform coat with golden buttons, wearing gray gloves, as shown. He is depicted standing at the entrance of his field tent, holding a copy of the “Declaration of Independence” in his left hand, while thrusting his right hand into his waistcoat. To the right is his camp stool, upon which is a spyglass, some scrolls, and his black hat. Washington’s camp stands atop a hill, with his Continental Army infantry troops standing below in the distant valley, located by a small city with a river running nearby. Several areas of surface abrasions on the print and with some paper wrinkles, having had early conservation (worthy of modern conservation). There is some age tone along the border; the Hand-colored Print is still with eye-catching bright colors. An exceedingly rare for which this cataloger has not located another being offered for sale since having offered this same piece in our EAHA Auction of October 9, 2004, where is sold for $6,325. This being a depiction of Washington, published September 7, 1797. as he prepares to leave the office of First President of the United States.
