“George Washington / President of The United States of America...” Portrait from Life, After a painting by Edward Savage Attributed as Engraved by Edward Savage, c. 1793

c. 1793 Mezzotint Engraving titled: “George Washington. President of the United States of America. From the Original Portrait Painted at the request of the Corporation of the University of Cambridge in Massachusetts.”, after a painting by Edward Savage, engraver not identified yet believed to be Engraved by Edward Savage, Framed, Choice Fine or better.

A superb impresson, Image size measures plate 21-1/4” x 15-1/8”, the copper plate outline is seen embossed within the sheet measures 21-7/8” x 15-3/4” (by sight), in choice condition with well repaired tear beneath “George” in title margin. This being one of the great "Lifetime" portraits of the first president George Washington. There are several variations of this famous portrait and this well executed example appears to be Wick #34, Hart #229. Hart list it as an “unknown engraver” although the plate is not identified in the formal printed small text below the image, “unknown engraver” engraver formally listed, however it is commonly believed to be engraved by Edward Savage, being executed in his exact style.

This handsome Mezzotint engraving of George Washington from Life, is also created after Edward Savage's painting that is currently at Harvard University. Here, the full sheet image is professionally framed in an ornate contemporary 18th century style, displayed under special UV Plexiglas, measuring fully to 26.25” x 20.25” and ready to hang on display, Shown in Washington's hands is an early Map of the new United States Capital, which bears his name (Washington), with “EASTERN BRANCH” noted on the (Potomac) river.
