BENJAMIN LINCOLN (1733-1810). Major General in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, as George Washington's Second in Command, he formally accepted the British Surrender at Yorktown in 1781; Appointed by President Washington as the first Collector of Customs of the Port of Boston in 1789; holding this lucrative and influential post until 1809.

Lincoln", as Collector of Customs, Port of Marblehead, certifying that a Cask of 35 gallons of wine was imported into the District of Massachusetts in the American Ship "Joanna" from Bordeaux, France. It measures 10” x 4.8”, appearing bright fresh and clean laid period paper with a Customs Seal with embossed American Eagle at upper left, and overall vivid, Choice Extra Fine or better. |
