c. 1820 Early 19th Century, “Dr. Franklin’s Maxim” Child’s Mug / Cup, “Little Strokes Fell Great Oaks...” Staffordshire, England, Very Fine.
A quality vibrant example that is nice for display. This delightful vignette transfer Child’s Cup measures about 2.75” in diameter and 2.5” tall. The text reads:
“Dr Franklin’s Maxims / Little Strokes Fell Great Oaks. / By Diligence and Patience the Mouse ate in two the Cable.”
It is transfer printed in rich dark black text and four-color hand applied polychrome in shades of cherry red, green, blue and golden yellow. One side of the mug has a transfer of a proud wood cutter with his axe after felling the mighty oak. Bright colors and clean with a sharp image, two minor chips in the base rim not affecting the transfers and a fine hairline on the inner side. It is lightly used with minimal normal wear with a nice glaze.
