1863 Stephen Mallory Confederate States Secretary of the Navy Letter Signed & Endorsed by CSA Navy Commander William A. Webb Forced to Surrender CSS Savannah June 17, 1863 Being Just 11 Days After Endorsing This Letter!

June 3, 1863-Dated Civil War Period, Letter boldly Signed, "S. R. Mallory", as Confederate States of America Secretary of the Navy, 1 page, measuring 7.75" x 9.75", Choice Very Fine. Written from Richmond, VA, on official stationery of the Confederate States of America Navy Department, to Assistant Paymaster, W. R. Micon, Confederate States Navy, at Savannah, Georgia. A well written and easily readable letter in rich brown on clean light blue lined wove period paper. This Letter advising paymaster Micon that $10,000 will be sent to him from the Confederate Treasury Department to pay the vessels in his department, and that the draft is a replacement for one sent in April, 1863 but never received.
At bottom left is an Autograph Endorsement Signed, "Forwarded June 6th, W. A. Webb, Comdg Squadron". A scarce Civil War date Autograph of WILLIAM A. WEBB, (1824-1881). Virginia born, Webb resigned his commission in the U.S. Navy in May, 1861 after more than 20 years service to join the Confederate States Navy. He was decorated for his meritorious services as Captain Of the CSS Teaser as part of the James River Squadron during the Battle of Hampton Roads in 1862. In 1863, Webb Commanded the Savannah Squadron, which included the Ironclad CSS Atlanta. Webb was forced to Surrender the CSS Savannah on June 17, 1863 (just 11 days after endorsing this letter), following an engagement with the USS Weehawken. Webb was imprisoned in Fort Warren, in Boston Harbor until paroled in Sept. 1864. He was exchanged in October 1864, and fought once again as Commander of the CSS Richmond on the James River.
