October 31, 1775-Dated Revolutionary War Period, Messotint Portrait Engraving titled, “Charles Lee, Esqr. Major General of the Continental-Army in America.” by “Thomlinson pinx”, Published by C. Shepherd, Oct. 31, 1775., London, Framed, Fine.

An impressive very popular early Revolutionary War Period Engraving with its full outer margins, measuring 15” x 10.25” (by sight), decoratively gold-gilt period framed fully to 19” x 14” ready to hang on display with brass loop hanger at top. A nice impression of this early print of Charles Lee, the famous General of the American Revolution. This example has strong contrast, its plate impression still seen embossed in the heavy print paper. Overall, having light tone, some soiling and scattered modest humidity tones, some wear chipping and touch-up to the frame, as shown. Tomlinson's portrait of General Charles Lee is an invented portrait: the image bears little resemblance to contemporary accounts of his appearance and there is no record of him sitting for the artist. This portrait was executed and printed early in the Revolutionary War with the expectation that Lee would play a major role in the conflict, an assumption based on his past military record in the French and Indian War. Although born in England, Charles Lee committed himself to the Patriot cause and soon became a leader in the Colonial army. Lee took part in the defense of Charleston, South Carolina and was a Commander at the Battle of Monmouth. This is a impressive early engraving of this Revolutionary War General, which not only records the practice of invented portraits, but became a compositional model for other portraits of other American Revolutionary War heroes.
