Likely Federal Period, Thin Copper Customs Stamp Seal Face, “PORT OF SALEM”, Extremely Fine.
38 mm. This scarce official seal is the key part of a device for making an impression into paper or other medium, including “embossment” of paper or vellum. The original purpose was to authenticate a document this example being the round copper seal for the Port of Salem. The engraved portions are clear, showing light actual use and some wear. There is a tiny rim chip at the very bottom at the outer decorative edge line outward which was likely incurred when removed from the sealing device. |
