W.S. Hancock Civil War General & Presidential Candidate
c. 1880, CDV Photograph, Winfield S. Hancock, Democratic Candidate for President in 1880, Choice Very Fine.
A well-dressed Winfield S. Hancock is the subject of this CDV Photo. The Civil War General who defeated Lee at Gettysburg, Hancock later went into politics and eventually ran for President. This 4" x 2.5" CDV is likely from that period in his life. This card is in very nice condition, lightly toned, with no folds or tears. One corner is chipped on the back, but this does not affect the front of the card. A great photograph of a lesser known Presidential Candidate.

Winfield Scott Hancock (1824-1886) was a Civil War General and politician. After graduating from West Point, he served in the Mexican War. At the start of the American Civil War, he was appointed a Brigadier General of volunteers, and eventually became a corps commander in the Army of the Potomac (1863-1865). He served with distinction at the Battle of Gettysburg, defeating Confederate Generals Lee and Pickett. After the war he commanded the military division of Louisiana and Texas. He later won the support of the Democratic Party, which nominated him for President in 1880, but he lost the election to James Garfield.
