c. 1785 Colonial to Federal Period, Engraved Bookplate of “Samuel Jordan Cabell” of VA, Officer in the Revolutionary War and in U.S. Congress from Virginia, Extremely Fine.

Samuel Jordan Cabell (1756-1818), son of Virginia Patriot William Cabell, served as an officer in the American Revolutionary War; Captain of the Amherst County Volunteers which was with the 6th Virginia Regiment; he participated in the Battle of Saratoga & was promoted to Major; Served in George Washington’s Army 1778-1789, promoted to Lt. Colonel; Captured at the Siege of Charleston in 1780 and held as Prisoner of War until the War’s end; Served in the Virginia House of Delegates, 1785-1783; Delegate to the Virginia Ratification Convention, where he voted against the proposed U.S. Constitution; in the U.S. Congress 1795-1803.
His personal Woodblock Engraved Bookplate that measures about 4" x 3.25" with, "Samuel Jordan Cabell, of Soldier’s Joy." text within an oval at center, flanked by the figures of “Liberty” and a “Revolutionary War Officer” (Possibly George Washington), with an Eagle, Shield and Masonic “All-Seeing Eye” at top center. Trimmed across the top, boldly printed in deep black on laid period paper, appearing clean and fresh in eye appeal. "Soldier’s Joy" was the name of Samuel Jordan Cabell’s home, built in 1785.
