May 6, 1776 Virginia Four Pounds Note PMG Choice F-15 with All Dashes for Value in Newman, Denomination Rarity
Current Money of Virginia. May 6, 1776 Ordinance Issue. Four Pounds / Eighty Shillings. PMG graded Choice Fine-15.
Fr. VA-101. The first May 6, 1776 Revolutionary War Virginia Ordinance currency issue Four Pounds note we have offered. Conservatively graded, it appears to have the eye appeal and centering of Very Fine. This note is fully Signed by Morris and Seaton. It is well printed on the standard thick rag paper, uniface, with nice design details. The "Arms of Virginia" are engraved by Robert Scott, being displayed at upper left within decorative outer border cuts. A "key" rarity from this 1776 date with only 1,000 notes printed. All notes on this issue were to be redeemed by January 1st, 1784 back into the Treasury and destroyed.

This Four Pounds note is the highest denomination on the issue. PMG states having a tape repair (this at top center centerfold edge and appears to be a tiny near invisible piece of an old stamp hinge from prior mounting... not tape), plus some worn corners and a trivial pinhole at top edge. *Note: The only other 4 example we could trace was Ex: Ford Collection sale being graded Very Fine (with problems), that realized $1,380 in the 2007 John Ford Collection XVII sale. This is an exceedingly rare denomination lacking in virtually all Colonial and Virginia currency collections. Aan important opportunity for Virginia currency collectors.
