Revolutionary War British Troop Transport & Slave Ship
March 8, 1780-Dated Revolutionary War Period, British Royal Navy Autograph Letter Signed, "John Dixon," Regarding Outfitting the HMS Providence, London, Very Fine.
Original Autograph Letter, 3 pages, with Integral Mailing Cover, measuring 7.25" x 9", written by John Dixon to Nathaniel Bayles, regarding the outfitting of the ship H.M.S. Providence for the Navy under Captain Ritchie. Dixon writes that he needs money to keep outfitting the ship and to avoid complaints by the Navy Board. Dixon also states that there are two indentured servants aboard, but most likely won't be back as he has also lost several servants in the same manner. Paper loss to final page where the black wax seals were broken upon opening of this Letter affecting a few words. The National Archives has a grouping of letters from the Ship Providence showing that the Providence was also a Slave ship. Title of the archive in the British National Archives is as follows: "John Ritchie, Captain of ship Providence: corresp to Nathaniel Bayles of Newcastle while sailing between New York and Jamaica, voyage accounts, crew wages lists, Slave cargoes and the Providence's involvement in the American War of Independence 1780-1782."
Captain John Ritchie was the Master of the ship Providence, a British ship under contract with the Navy Board to transport troops to fight in the war in North America. The Providence was owned by English merchant Nathaniel Bayles. The Providence transported Hessian and Scottish regiments, as well as weapons and supplies needed in New York.

The National Archives has a grouping of letters from the Ship Providence showing that the Providence was also a Slave ship. Title of the archive in the British National Archives is as follows: "John Ritchie, Captain of ship Providence: corresp to Nathaniel Bayles of Newcastle while sailing between New York and Jamaica, voyage accounts, crew wages lists, Slave cargoes and the Providence's involvement in the American War of Independence 1780-1782."
