Union General Robert Anderson Inscribed and Signed Carte de Visite Photograph of the Fort Sumter Union Commander
ROBERT ANDERSON (1805-1871). Union Commander and Hero of the First Battle of the Civil War at Fort Sumter in April 1861.
c. 1863 Civil War Period, exceptional and rare Carte de Visite Photograph of Union General Robert Anderson, Inscribed and Signed, "Mrs. Genl. Marcy with the regards of her friend. Robert Anderson.", measuring 2.5" x 4", New York, Choice Very Fine. Image shows Anderson, seated in a chair, dressed in his military uniform and holding a small child in his lap. Back stamp reads, "Faris Photographic Gallery (late Root's) No 751 Broadway New York." An exceptional signed image with excellent tonality and contrast with a lovely vivid signature on the reverse.
Anderson became an immediate national hero as the man who defied South Carolina officials by not abandoning Fort Sumter after the bombardment. His recruitment tour of the U.S. was highly successful, and he also served as commander of the Department of Kentucky before handing over command to General Sherman in October 1861.
