Counterfeiters Get Their Punishment - 1770 Convicted Counterfeiters Receive Harsh Corporal Punishment in a Contemporary Record of the time in a Pillory, Cropping (cutting off) of their Ears, Branding their Cheeks with the Letter "R", Whipped with 39 Lashes, and returned to Jail
(STEPHEN HOPKINS - TRIAL PART II) October 26, 1770-Dated Colonial America, Autographed Document Record Signed, "B Brown" as Sher(iff), of the Corporal Punishment of Convicted Counterfeiters, Kings County (Rhode Island).
Official Contemporary Handwritten, Manuscript Document Signed and Dated Report by the Sheriff of Kings County, (Rhode Island) displaying of the Extremely Severe Corporal Punishments meted out to convicted Counterfeiters, sentenced on October 26, 1770, 1 page, measuring 12" x 8," at the bottom Signed, "B Brown Sher." (Sheriff), in bold brown on fresh, clean, lightly folded period laid paper, Choice Very Fine.

This Sheriff's report relates directly to the Stephen Hopkins signed document also offered in this sale. It is an absolute miracle that they appear together some 250 years later, considering that both documents came to us at this moment in time from two different consignors! (The odds of such an occurrence are simply off the charts.) In any event, the Stephen Hopkins document is a Warrant for the Arrest of certain named individuals, and this is a Record of the Punishment they received after their convictions. Their punishments included time in a Pillory, Cropping (cutting off) of their Ears, Branding their Cheeks with the Letter "R", and "return to his Majistys (sic) Goal" (Jail). Accompanied by a full prior transcript typed on onionskin paper. Easily readable, this is by far the very best, most straightforward description, and amazing record of the punishments actually handed out to convicted Counterfeiters in Colonial America we have ever offered.
