1736 Hand-Colored Engraved Copper Plate Map titled, "THE ROAD FROM LONDON TO DOVER IN KENT", measuring 7.75" x 5.25", from Britannia Depicta, London, Choice Crisp Very Fine.
This highly colorful and ornately Engraved Map comes with a description of London on one side, being a leaf (pages 41/42) from Brritannia Depicta... 1736. Page 41 is a Copper Plate Engraved ornately decorated description of London. It has excellent bright colors and rich black text printed on clean period paper having some faint outer edge tone. Page 42 on the reverse side shows the Mapped Road to Dover in Kent. This strip style Map shows the main road and crossroads leading to various towns along the way. The various engravings detail the surrounding topography including churches, rivers, bridges, pastures, woods, forests and hills. On each strip is a compass rose showing the direction of travel as well as the distance, in miles, from the start point. Publisher: Thomas Bowles, St. Paul's Churchyard, London. Full title: Britannia Depicta or Ogilby Improv'd; being a correct copy of Mr. Ogilby's actual survey of all ye direct & principal crossroads in England and Wales: wherein are exactly delineated & engraven, all ye Cities, Towns, Villages, Churches, Seats &c. situated on or near the Roads, with their respective distances in measured and computed miles. The engraving has distinct plate marks with both plates beautifully hand-coloured with choice eye appeal for display.
