"The Life and Heroic Exploits of Israel Putnam" by Colonel David Humphreys
1853 Edition: "The Life and Heroic Exploits of Israel Putnam," by Colonel David Humphreys, Very Fine.
The full title of this work, copyrighted in 1833, reads: "The Life and Heroic Exploits of Israel Putnam, Major-General in the Revolutionary War." The author is Colonel David Humphreys, who was Aide-de-camp to General George Washington. This 1853 edition was published in Hartford, CT by Silas Andrus & Son. Bound in brown embossed boards, with gilt decoration and lettering on the spine reading "Life of Putnam", this 190 page, 7.5" x 5" book is "Illustrated with Plates, from original designs." This book is complete, intact, and well bound. There is foxing throughout the book, and at the top corner of the pages there is a stain in the first 60 or so pages that you can see in the pictures below. On page 44 there is a signature at the top of the page as you can see in the picture below. There is also writing in the front end and the back end of the book. A nice period biography of this most famous and historic American heroic military figure of both the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War.
David Humphreys (1752"1818) was an American diplomat and poet, born in Derby, Connecticut. His military talent and patriotism won him a place on the staff of General Washington during the American Revolution. He served in the Connecticut Assembly (1786-1788) and on various missions for the United States government, and was appointed Minister to Spain in 1790. This book, or an earlier version of it titled, "An Essay on The Life of Honorable Major-General Israel Putnam," was originally published in 1788, and went through several editions through at least 1818. The 1833 edition appears to be the first with the title, "The Life and Heroic Exploits of Israel Putnam."
