1844 Pre-Civil War "Intentions of Marriage" Certification!
October 26, 1844-Dated, "Certifies, the intentions of marriage" Official Completed Partly-Printed Document, at Baldwin, State of Maine, Choice Very Fine.
October 26, 1844-Dated Partially Printed Document Signed, "C.D. Sawyer" as Town Clerk of Baldwin, Maine. Measures approximately 8" x 5". Folds, minor edge chips and light toning. Reads, in full: "State of Maine. This certifies, that the intentions of marriage between Mr. J. Simeon Sanborn and Miss Almira Sanborn, both of Baldwin, have been entered in the Town Clerk's Office and published in the Town of Baldwin according to law. Certified at Baldwin the twenty-sixth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty-four. (Signed) C.D. Sawyer, Town Clerk." The blank reverse includes the Handwritten notation, in full: "Mr. Simeon Sandborn & Miss Almira Sanborn were joined in marriage Sunday after noon Nov. 24. 1844." An interesting document declaring a couple's intention to wed prior to marriage!
