Exceedingly Rare George Washington Funeral Medal Badge Likely Unique with Baker-164 Medal Central Portrait Shell

c. 1800 (1799-Dated Medal Portrait). Funeral Medal Badge of George Washington. Baker-164. "VICTOR SINE CLADE" Medal Central Portrait Shell upon Black Cloth Ribbon. Choice Near Mint.

George Washington died December 14, 1799. The "VICTOR SINE CLADE" Medal, dated 1799 is known to be the very first struck George Washington Funeral Medal. The dies to strike this medal were cut by Nicholas Pearce, after the designs by Dudley A, Tyng, the United States Collector of Customs at Newburyport, Massachusetts. Of the original struck examples of this complete medal, only 2 or 3 are known in decent condition according to Russell Rulau and George Fuld as stated within the major reference, "The Medallic Portraits of Washington." This first style Washington Funeral Medal is listed as Baker-164, is simply listed as Extremely Rare.

This apparently unique George Washington Funeral Medal Portrait Shell Badge is beautifully Handcrafted. Its George Washington Profile Bust die is stamped into a metal shell which measures approximately 1" tall x 0.75" wide. Tiny attachment holes at top and bottom allow for this metal Washington portrait to be hand-sewn attached to its black memorial fabric ribbon, measuring in full 2.25" tall x 1.5" wide.

The obverse displays a large central Bust of General Washington dressed in his military uniform facing left. This possibly unique memorial ribbon has an original die struck metal shell either in tin or silver, of that prominent central bust portrait. It is attached to a fine quality, period black cloth ribbon, being attached by hand-sewn thread to top and bottom. The George Washington Shell Portrait has lovely natural silver-gray color with significant original luster and light golden-auburn overtones. No pinback. It is carefully, perfectly centered upon the ribbon/badge for display.

Made to wear on display during the mourning period immediately following Washington's death, to be pinned upon a lapel. This cataloger has never seen or located any instance of the existence of another specimen. An amazing rarity in near Mint State quality that remains fully lustrous with excellent overall eye appeal. Accompanied by the appropriate "The Medallic Portraits of Washington." reference book page displaying the 1799-dated Baker-164 medal.
