Extremely Rare George Washington Fame Medal Baker-84

c. 1803, Washington Fame Medal, Uniface Electrotype Shell, Copper-Plated White Metal, Baker-84, Extremely Rare, Choice About Uncirculated.

This extremely rare and unusual Washington Medal comes from the famous Norweb Collection. The obverse has a portrait of Washington facing right, with his name above and his dates below. The obverse surface of this 38 mm medal is copper and retains most of its original red-orange luster. The reverse is blank, without rim, and lead colored. This electrotype copy was likely made for some collector's or some institution's collection, and would therefore be quite rare. The making of electrotype copies of rare coins or medals, for study, was a common practice in the early to mid-1800's. A very rare and high quality Washington Medal with a great pedigree. Ex: Stack's Norweb Collection sale, November 7, 2006, Lot 2087 with auction tag.
