14-page pamphlet of Honorable James Harlan's speech on the admission of Kansas as a state. Delivered on March 27, 1856 to the United States Senate. 9" x 5.75", Lightly toned in excellent condition with bright, clear print. The speech is about the decision of whether Kansas should be a slave state or a free state when entering the union. "...I have never hitherto attempted to desired to make a speech on the perplexing subject of African Slavery as it exists in the United States. I had supposed its discussion useless, mischievous, and even dangerous to the perpetuity of the union." Also a page on the back of the pamphlet titled: "TO THE OPPONENTS OF SLAVERY-EXTENSION" which includes a list of documents already published on the subject. |
