September 17, 1863-Dated Civil War Period, Historical Print titled, "Military Execution", by Endicott & Co. Litho, New York, Very Fine.

Rarely encountered original Civil War Print measures about 18.5" x 13". Its full title reads: "Military Execution of James Griffin, alias John Thomas Barnett, a Private of the 11th Pa. Cavalry, for Desertion and Highway Robbery, at Portsmouth, Va., Sept. 17th, 1863." Graphic Image shows an assembly of troops in formation with tents in the background. Minor damp staining on the blank reverse along with some small old tape reinforcements to minor outer edge splits, with some soiling to margins. Inside the formation, the firing squad has just completed the execution with Barnett laying dead across his coffin! Text just below the image lists the various units of soldiers in the formation, including: "1st Regt. U.S. Col'd Troops., 2nd U.S. Col'd Troops., 21st Conn. Vols., Detach't 7th N.Y. Battery., Detach't 5th Pa. Cavalry., Detach't 11th Pa. Cavalry., 148th N.Y. Vols." The first of this impressive Civil War print we have offered and it appears nice for framing and display.
