c. 1780 to 1800s Colonial to Federal Period, Highly Decorated Early American Leather Covered Wooden Chest or Lock Box, Used, Fine-Very Fine.

This very solid, well crafted Leather Covered Wooden Chest / Lock Box measures about 15" x 9" x 9" with good internal volume for storage, no place, date or maker. The top lid and all four sides have an elaborate designs of period brass tack decorations which appear to be completely intact as made, along with a decorative brass handle at top center. There is no liner interior liner only raw wood, overall, its leather flap along lid and sides is worn from use and wrinkled with age. There is an original brass lock at front center, lacking a key, but is not locked and opens with ease. This sturdy decorative piece is possibly from the mid-Atlantic Colonies and is of good size for display. |
