Admiral David Glasgow Farragut (1801-1870), was the ranking Flag Officer of the United States Navy during the American Civil War. He is remembered in popular culture for his order at the Battle of Mobile Bay, usually paraphrased: "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!" This outstanding Hand-Painted Pastel of the Civil War Union Navy Admiral shown in a seated waist up portrait, measures 16" x 19.75" on heavy early artist board. No date, signature or place. Subdued coloring in shades of rich blue, gray and white provide Admiral Farragut a superbly "regal" and near photographic authentic appearance.
