Valley Forge Encampment Continental Army Soldier Certifications of His Service

Three Valley Forge Encampment Related Manuscript Document Certifications of the Revolutionary War Army Service for Timothy Wheeler, a Soldier who served at in the 2nd Regiment of the Connecticut Line of the Continental Army at Valley Forge Camp where he Died, Choice Very Fine.

Timothy Wheeler is listed on page 210 of the reference book titled, "Fire Cake and Water: The Connecticut Infantry at the Valley Forge Encampment," by Joseph Lee Boyle. There he is shown having enlisted into the Continental Army on January 25th, 1777 in the 2nd Regiment of the Connecticut Line in the Continental Army, for 3 years service and Died on March 20th 1778 during his Encampment at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. This Archive of Three (3) related Manuscript Documents all relate to the estate of Wheeler being thru the Probate Court and assigned to his wife Rhoda. These three related Documents are each written in brown ink on clean laid period paper and are easily readable. Including:

1. March 25, 1783-Dated Revolutionary War Hartford Pay Table Certificate of Payment for Army Service Funds due to the widow of Timothy Wheeler, "Rhoda Wheeler" being officially Signed with her "X" Mark, authorizing "... what is due to the estate of my late Husband Decst. (deceased) for his Service in the Continental Army in his three years Service." payable to a Samuel Milington, measuring 7.25" x 3" of Stafford (CT.). States he served three years. This being authorized on the same date, and Signed by Isaac Pinny, Justice of the Peace.

2. April 3, 1783-Dated Revolutionary War, Certificate of Service for Timothy Wheeler, measuring 7.75" x 1.5", of Stafford (CT.). This Document reads, in full:

This may Certify Whom it may Concern that Timothy Wheeler was a Soldier in the Continental Army in the Continental Line from the day of his Inlistement (sic) being Jany. 25th 1777 until his Deceas March 20th 1778 Certified per Select men - Stafford April 3rd 1783."

3. May 4, 1778-Dated Revolutionary War, Court of Probate Certificate for the Widow of Timothy Wheeler, measuring 7.25" x 2.75", of Stafford (CT.). The court Appoints Mrs. Wheeler as Administrator of his Estate. (3 items).

Valley Forge Encampment - December 1777 - June 1778 - The Winter at Valley Forge

The Valley Forge Pennsylvania encampment was occupied by the American Continental Army from December 1777 to June 1778. The winter was particularly harsh, and the army was short on food, clothing, and supplies. But they hung on. The leadership of Commander-in-Chief George Washington and Baron von Steuben, the Prussian drill sergeant, kept the soldiers occupied and made them better, tougher soldiers in the end.

In June 19, 1778, the Continental Army set out for New Jersey, where they fought the British to a stand-still just nine days later, at the Battle of Monmouth. Among the soldiers who were encamped with Washington at Valley Forge were Generals Nathanael Greene and Benedict Arnold; Alexander Hamilton, Washington's personal aide; the Marquis de Lafayette; and a man named John Marshall, who would go on to become the first famous Chief Justice of the United States.
