James Holmes, 4th NY Regt. THOMAS BARCLAY (1753-1830). Colonial New York Attorney, Protg of New York Governor and Continental Congress President John Jay who had served in the British Tory “Loyal American Regiment” through the Revolutionary War. Barclay left to Nova Scotia as a Loyalist, he later Led the British Committees to Determine United States and Canadian Border. George Chahoon as the Reconstruction Mayor of Richmond, Virginia Signed 1870 United States “Oath of Allegiance” GEORGE CHAHOON (1840-1934). Born in NY, but moved to Virginia when an infant; Loyal to the Union during the Civil War, he was appointed Mayor of Richmond in 1868 by Virginia's Military Commander, General John M. Schofield, and served until 1871; after he took office he began purging the City Government of former Confederates, and created a special 25-man Black Police Force with a Black Chief. In March, 1870, a new Mayor was appointed and Chahoon refused to vacate his office, leading to a lengthy dispute during which Richmond had two Mayors. Chahoon finally lost his challenge and shortly afterwards, he was convicted of forgery and sent to Prison, but was pardoned on condition that he leave the State. WILLIAM COWPER Anti-Slavery British Advocate & Poet Signed 1760 “His Majesty's Receipt of Exchequer.” Annuity WILLIAM COWPER (1731-1800). English Poet and Hymnodist, wrote “God moves in a mysterious way / His wonders to perform.”, also wrote a number of Anti-Slavery poems including the historic “The Negro's Complaint” (1788) which was often quoted by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the American Civil Rights movement. Thomas Cranston was an Associate Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court from August 1763 to May 1764, and served as Speaker of the Rhode Island House of Representatives at the time; the town of Cranston, Rhode Island was created in 1754 and historians believe either Cranston, his grandfather, or father Samuel Cranston became the namesake of Cranston. The first page of the first town record book of Cranston bears the inscription "the gift of Thomas Cranston to the town called Cranston." A University of Virginia graduate, served in the Confederate Army through the Civil War, as a Private in 1st Company, Richmond Howitzers Light Artillery from 1861-1863, later as a Lt. in Haskell's Battalion, C.S. Artillery from 1863-1865, after the Civil War became one of Richmond's leading tobacco manufacturers owning a factory with 250 employees and with annual sales of nearly 1.5 million pounds; among his leading brands was "Trumps Long Cut".
