Pennsylvania Chief Justice James T. Mitchell Builds His Unequalled Collection of George Washington Portraits - Archive Collection of 10 Separate Letters Each Dated 1891

JAMES T. MITCHELL (1834-1915). Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania (1889-1903) and Chief Justice (1903-1910), President of the Pennsylvania Historical Society and an Avid Collector of Autographs, Early American Documents and Engraved & Lithographed Portraits of George Washington. Much of his collection is held by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and his Collection of Engraved Portraits of Washington was sold at auction in 1906, the Catalog of which Described the Collection as "Unequalled" ("The Unequalled Collection of Engraved Portraits of Washington Belonging to Hon. James T. Mitchell, Chief Justice of Pennsylvania", Stanislaus V. Henkel, Philadelphia). .
