GEORGE CHAHOON (1840-1934). Born in NY, but moved to Virginia when an infant; Loyal to the Union during the Civil War, he was appointed Mayor of Richmond in 1868 by Virginia's Military Commander, General John M. Schofield, and served until 1871; after he took office he began purging the City Government of former Confederates, and created a special 25-man Black Police Force with a Black Chief. In March, 1870, a new Mayor was appointed and Chahoon refused to vacate his office, leading to a lengthy dispute during which Richmond had two Mayors. Chahoon finally lost his challenge and shortly afterwards, he was convicted of forgery and sent to Prison, but was pardoned on condition that he leave the State. He moved back to New York, where he became successful in business and served in the State Senate. |
