1864-Dated Civil War Period Produced, WASHINGTON AND HIS FAMILY (Plus Servant) Large “PROOF” Marked Print, Engraved and Signed by “William Sartain”, Philadelphia, PA, Choice Very Fine.

A handsome large size Engraved Print on a wove sheet measuring 20” x 26.5” Printed by Irwin & Sartain, this special copy is marked “PROOF” and is Hand-Signed in pencil “William Sartain” at bottom right, being a George Washington family portrait, after a painting by “G. Schussele.” William Sartain (1843-1924) was an American engraver and painter best known for his contributions to the art of printmaking. This example was previously framed for display, thus laid on a heavier stiff card backing. Overall, light even expected tone with prior mat outline at the outer margin peripheries. A beautifully executed print with no folds, having attractive choice contrast. In small print below the image it reads: “Entered According To Act Of Congress In 1864 By G. Schussele In The Office Of The District Court For The Eastern District Of Pennsylvania.” A rare engraver “William Sartain” Signed “PROOF” edition.
