October 21, 1864-Dated Civil War Partly-Printed Union Draft Enrollment Document,fully executed, at Somerset, Pennsylvania, Exempts a Wellersburg, PA man from the Draft because he is a “Rebel Deserter”, Framed, Fine.
This highly unusual rare original Union army “Draft Exemption” Document, 1 page, measuring 10.5” x 8” dated at Somerset, Pennsylvania, exempts a Wellersburg, PA man from the Union Draft because he is a Rebel Deserter, after he himself advised the Board of Enrollment of his status as a Rebel Deserter, so that he would not be subject to the draft. Document has folds and scattered ink smudges, short fold split and a worn rough bottom margin, fully framed to 16” x 13” the document tipped in the corners to a white backing sheet. This Document reads, in full:
“FORM 30. --- CERTIFICATE OF NON-LIABILTY, TO BE GIVEN BY THE BOARD OF ENROLLMENT. -- We, the subscribers, composing the Board of Enrollment of the Sixteenth District of the State of Pennsylvania, provided for in section 8, Act of Congress 'for enrolling and calling out the national forces,' approved March 3, 1863, hereby certify that Christopher Slonaker, Wellersburg, of Somerset county, State of Pennsylvania, having given satisfactory evidence that he is not properly subject to do military duty, as required by said act, and the act approved Feb'y 24, 1864, by reason of Rebel Deserter, is exempt from all liability to military duty under the present draft.
