September 10th, 1794-Dated Large Copper-Plate Engraving titled: "The Right Honorable Earl Howe," by Dunkarton, after the Painting by John Singleton Copley, London, England, Framed, Choice Extremely Fine.
A gorgeous large engraving, measuring 19.9" x 14.9" (by sight), attached to mat overleaf of 24" x 19", professionally beautifully display framed to 28.75” x 22.25”, featuring Richard Earl Howe in three-quarter bust pose, in his military British Naval uniform, shown looking directly at the viewer. Howe was the brother of the Commander of all British Forces in America during the Revolutionary War, Sir William Howe, and he saw Naval action during the 1776 to 1778 timeframe. The legend at the bottom reads: "Painted by J.S. Copley R.A. - Engraved by R. Dunkarton / The Right Honorable Earl Howe / From an Original Picture in the Possession of Lady Howe - London, Published Sept 10th 1794 by J.S. Copley, George Street, Hanover Square. London" This example may have been in lot 167 of The Copley Print Sale, held by Sotheby's on Feb. 15-17, 1820. Reference: See Prown, "John Singleton Copley in England," figure 596.
