December 22, 1864-Dated General Order No. 35, 1 page, measuring 8” x 9.75” from the desk of John L. Hodson, Adjutant General of the State of Maine. This Order lists eight points focusing on the Recruitment effort of the Union Army during the Civil War.
The Order includes notes on filling the state quota by volunteers rather than by the draft, the discontinuation of furloughing of drafted men which was found to be “fruitful of desertions and delays in re-inforcing”, clarifications regarding the payment of principals and their substitutes, whether volunteers or drafted men, and ends with these urgent and hopeful words, “The opportunities for participating in this sacred and honored cause are daily becoming less. The end is plainly in view and not far off.”
Docket on the blank reverse reads: “Ajt. General”. |
