May 1, 1786, South Carolina, Contemporary Counterfeit Ten Pounds in “Gold or Silver Coin”, Original Engraved by Thomas Abernathe of Charleston, PCGS graded Very Good-10.

Fr. SC-172. This Exceedingly Rare 1786, South Carolina, Contemporary Counterfeit Large Format Notes holder states pieces missing, backed as clearly illustrated. “Abernathe FECIT Charleston” printed in the far left margin design, “Signed” by Jn. Huger and Jn. Postell Sr., Uniface. Measuring 167mm x 115mm. This “Five Year Tax Certificate” was Secured by Mortgage of Land. Boldly “X” cancelled on the face, with “Counterfeit” handwritten across bottom. An important South Carolina fiscal document and Contemporary Counterfeit, which is virtually unheard of for this issue with less than a handful known to exist. As rough as this note may be, just try to find another (if you can ever)!
