c. Made in 1851, Rare 1st year of production Civil War Period Colt Model 1851 NAVY black powder percussion Revolver made in 1851, Serial number 4381 with period Leather Holster, both Very Fine.

This Revolver was made in 1851, Serial number 4381. With a 7.5" Iron, .36 caliber barrel, marked: "-ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW - YORK CITY" and stamped with the serial number 4381 in front of the trigger guard. The barrel has had a rear site added during its working life. The Colt 1851 Navy revolver is one of the top five handguns used during the American Civil War (1860-1865). The frame is correctly stamped on the left side, "COLTS / PATENT" with the serial number in front of the trigger guard. The cylinder is correct and depicts generous remnants of the BATTLE between the TEXAS NAVY and that of MEXICO "Scene" and is stamped with the serial number. The correct brass back-strap and the brass trigger guard is stamped with the serial number. The varnished wood grips (traces of original varnish remains) appear to be the original to the gun with only minor stains, scratches, nicks and minor loses from use, but is pleasing and solid. No original blue finish remains. Its all iron surface areas exhibit expected slight "salt & pepper" pitting from rust exposure over the years but remain in very nice overall condition. This revolver appears to be all original with no replacement parts or restoration, and remains in good mechanical working order. THE HOLSTER: The still flexible black leather holster is in wonderful condition and could possibly be Confederate. (More research should be performed). A choice attractive original pair. (2 items)
