This Revolver was made in 1851, Serial number 4381, with a 7.5" Iron .36 caliber barrel, marked: "ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW - YORK CITY" and Stamped with the matching serial number 4381 on both the front of the trigger guard. The barrel has a rear site added during its active working life. The Colt 1851 Navy revolver is one of the top five handguns used during the American Civil War. The frame is correctly stamped on the left side, "COLTS / PATENT" with the serial number in front of the trigger guard. The cylinder is correct and depicts generous remnants of the BATTLE between the TEXAS NAVY and that of MEXICO "Scene" and is stamped with the serial number.
The correct brass back-strap, and the brass trigger guard is stamped with the serial number 4381. The varnished wood grips having traces of the original varnish remaining are original to the gun. Only minor stains, scratches, nicks, and wear from use, yet pleasing and solid. None of the original blue finish remains. This Colt revolver appears to be all original, having no replacement parts or restoration and it remains in good mechanical working order. THE HOLSTER: The still flexible black leather holster is in nice condition and could possibly be Confederate. (More research is recommended.) Overall, a choice attractive original very collectible pair. (2 items)
