1787-Dated Federal Constitution Period, First Published English Edition of Thomas Jefferson’s authored Book titled, “NOTES ON THE STATE OF VIRGINIA”, Fine. This First Published English Edition measures 8.25” x 4.75” and contains 382 pages, plus a folded table of Indian Tribes (lacking is the folded map that usually accompanies). Printed in London by John Stockdale in 1787. The black hardcover binding is recent, with the spine ruled and lettered in gold-gilt and with new endpapers. The title page is toned, has chipped margins, and is lacking about a 1/2” strip of marginal paper along the top edge. The final leaf has edge toning and some light marginal chipping. The contents are clean, though there is some light and faded water-staining scattered throughout, along with a few instances of various other staind. Pages 17 and 181 have 1” marginal tears that were repaired with old paper. This important book includes a full-page woodcut of “Madison’s Cave” opposite Page 33, printed tables in the text, and a large folding table of Indian Tribes between Pages 152 and 153. This is generally considered the first published edition in English, following a privately printed 1785 edition and a 1786 French edition. Howes J78, Sabin 35896.
We note an offering on the Internet of a similar Stockdale edition with a map tipped in from a later American edition for $6,000.
