c. 1890s Custom Hand-Carved Wooden “Grizzly Bear” in the Forest Design, Desk Top Inkwell and Pen Tray, Choice Extremely Fine. This beautifully custom hand-carved Inkwell and Tray measures 7.5” long and stands 4” tall. The concept is great, almost Folk Art in style -- a Fearsome Grizzly Bear advances from left to right, with a very large diameter tree stump in front of him, and half of a hollowed log in the foreground. The hand-carving is sharp and nicely detailed, natural in effect, and the overall scene is very appealing. The stump has a hidden hinged top that opens to reveal the original glass inkwell housed within, and the half-log near the right side of the bear’s feet serves as a pen tray. This unique display item is still fully intact and usable, appears near mint complete and possibly made as an superb early California “Grizzly Bear” memento. |
