c. 1850 Decorative Brass Patriotic “American Eagle” Ink Blotter, Choice Very Fine.

This impressive large Cast Brass, American Eagle Ink Blotter measures about 6.5” long x 3.5” deep and 4.5” tall. The Eagle is shown in a crouched stance in a very defiant position and sits on a rocky ledge base. Remnants of original curved blotter paper remain beneath the brass mount and shows how each sheet was used, and then torn off, one by one until they were all gone. The blotter paper would have been replaced by unscrewing the brass mount from the attached wooden form but because it wasn’t, we now know what the paper looked like and how it was meant to be attached. This is an exceptional example, highly Patriotic and decorative, definitely not your ordinary dime-store blotter! This is a heavy, solid well-made, imposing high quality example created for a person of wealth and means. An unusual, eye-catching and stunning display piece.
