1840 Signed & Dated, Jacquard Coverlet, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, made for Elizbeth Lay by S. Kuter, Choice Extremely Fine.

Colorful Coverlet measuring about 95” x 80” (fringe included) with woven text at lower left reads: “Sold by S. Kuter and Manufactured for Elizbeth Lay 1840” and at lower right reads: “Manufactured by S. Kuter, Trexler Town, Lehigh County, 1840”. The rich colored yarn includes red, black, green, and yellow. The design consists of geometric flowers and leaves and the entire outer border is nicely fringed. The condition is excellent, the colors are bright and its overall appearance is lovely. Research reveals other similar examples made by Kuter, but this is one of his very earliest creations. One other example by this maker dated five years later sold at auction in 2020 for about $800. Trexlertown, PA is West-South-West of Allentown, PA. and was the home of at least one other well known coverlet producer (S. Hausman).
