1869 Ten Cents Abraham Lincoln Portrait Postage Stamp Essay, Scott 116-E1d, Printed in Green on White Wove Paper, Choice Crisp Die Proof.

A nice example of this Essay on Proof Paper, measuring 2-5/8” x 2-1/8” (53 mm x 67 mm). Essays were used to test a die to see the quality of the engraver’s work. This bold example is well-centered and has a rich, deep green color and a very nice central portrait of Lincoln. Problem-free but for a small stamp hinge remnant trace from removal on the blank back. Essays were printed in extremely small amounts, perhaps a handful. The Scott catalog values this example at $1,000. Scott Essay,116-E1d, printed in green.
