c. 1800 Federal GW Memorial Period, Hand-Carved George Washington Memorial White Marble Laureate Bust Portrait, Display Framed, Extremely Fine.

A lovely very rare piece of Washingtonia, consisting of a small Bust Portrait of George Washington intricately Hand-carved out of White Marble. We’ve seen similar pieces made out of wax, but this is the first we’ve offered produced out of the far more permanent material, Marble. The carving is Signed within the engraving at the bottom, however even under magnification we have not been able to read the artist’s name. This Hand-carving features an idealized Bust of Washington with long flowing hair, a wreath of laurel and mailed armor. The marble is in generally excellent condition. The Bust portrait has come loose from its felt background to which it was attached, and it could easily be sealed in place. From highest curl to lowest point, Washington’s bust measures 2.5” and at its widest point it measures 1.75” across. George is nicely framed under oval flat early glass in an old apparently period decorative oval wooden frame to an overall size of 7.25” x 6” with its original brass loop at top for hanging on display. The reverse wooden backing board has a partial advertisement for “W. Moore,” who styled himself as a Carver, Gilder, and Decorator, Looking Glass Picture Frame & Window Cornice Manufacturer, Paper-Hanger, &c. A uniquely designed George Washington Laureate Bust Portrait and one we’ve not seen or offered previously. Rare as such.
