John Philip Sousa was an American composer and conductor known primarily for his military and patriotic marches.

John Philip Sousa was born on November 6, 1854, in Washington, D.C., to John Antonio Sousa and Maria Elisabeth Trinkhaus. His father was of Portuguese and Spanish descent, and his mother was of German descent.

Sousa showed musical talent from a young age. He learned to play several instruments, including the violin and the trombone, and received formal music education at a young age. He studied under John Esputa and George Felix Benkert.

Sousa enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as an apprentice musician at the age of 13. He eventually became the leader of the Marine Band, a position he held from 1880 to 1892. Under his leadership, the Marine Band gained international fame for its performances.

Sousa composed over 130 marches, as well as operettas, suites, and other works. Some of his most famous marches include "The Stars and Stripes Forever," "Semper Fidelis," "The Washington Post March," and "El Capitan." He earned the nickname "The March King" for his prolific output and mastery of the genre.

In addition to his work with the Marine Band, Sousa conducted his own civilian concert band, the Sousa Band, which toured extensively in the United States and abroad. The band was immensely popular and performed a wide range of music beyond marches, including classical, popular, and patriotic pieces.

John Philip Sousa's contributions to American music are significant and enduring. His marches are still widely performed and beloved today, and he is considered one of the greatest composers of marches in history. "The Stars and Stripes Forever" is the official national march of the United States.

Sousa continued to compose and conduct music throughout his life. He also wrote books on music and gave lectures on various topics. He passed away on March 6, 1932, in Reading, Pennsylvania, leaving behind a lasting legacy in American music.

Overall, John Philip Sousa's impact on American music, particularly in the realm of marches and band music, is profound. His compositions continue to be celebrated and performed by musicians and bands around the world.
