“Duke of Wellington” Cameo Die Proof Vignette On Card

Click an Image to Enlarge It
1870s Original Specimen Die Proof Vignette of the Duke of Wellington in Profile. Red Printed Cameo Profile in Cycloidal Lathe Design. Crisp Near New.

This original Specimen Proof was printed on fine India paper and meticulously affixed to a sample book page card, measuring about 6.75” x 9”. No specific printer’s imprint and nicely printed in all red. This rare, possibly unique Specimen Proof example has a wonderful Cycloidal lathe pattern, in much the style of the Cyrus Durand used lathe, which encloses cameo head of the Duke of Wellington within a decorative surround. Perhaps made by Perkins & Bacon? There is some light extreme outer edge tone, and the paper remains crisp, having no folds. A very lovely red color to the Vignette of the Duke of Wellington device at center adds to the choice eye appeal making it excellent for display. The first we have seen and offered of this historic figure.
