1863 Civil War Advertising Token for J.J. Diehl, Undertaker

1863-Dated Civil War Storecard (Advertising Token) for J.J. Diehl, Undertaker, Extremely Fine.

This is one of the larger (24 mm) and more unusual Civil War tokens because of the seller’s business. J.J. Diehl was an undertaker in New York, a profession that saw a lot of action during the Civil War. Diehl contracted with one of the token manufacturers to create this interesting advertising token. The front of the token utilized a generic Indian head design that appears on similar tokens from other merchants. However, the reverse is unique to Diehl’s business and shows his name, address, and a logo of a coffin within a wreath. A rare and unusual Civil War item.
