Authentic Civil War Union New York "Excelsior" Gold Bullion Cloth Badge Insignia in lovely near mint quality. It has some light tone to some highpoints of the bright golden bullion. A prior collector's paper label on the blank reverse reads: "Civil War New York "Excelsior" Insignia". This Badge features exquisite embroidery work and measures about 2" x 2-5/8". A prime example for display.
The famous Excelsior Brigade was raised by Union General Daniel Sickles, who was its first commander. The First Excelsior Brigade was comprised of the 70th, 72nd, 73rd and 74th NY Infantry Regiments, and well known for their outstanding creative uniforms.
In October, 1861, the 71st NY along with the 70th through the 74th NY Infantry and 10 Companies of the 3rd Indiana Cavalry formed the Second Excelsior Brigade, under Gen. Sickles command. The Brigade served in several of the Army of the Potomac's most important battles in the Eastern Theatre, including Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. |
