October 18, 1862-Dated Civil War Period Manuscript Letter from Glidden & Williams California Packet Office, Boston, Mass., to J. B. Anthony at Providence, RI, regarding Anthony's nephew obtaining a position as a crew member on board the Clipper Ship "Geo. Raynes", Very Fine.
Glidden & Williams was a Boston based Clipper Ship packet line which ran ships primarily between Boston and California in the 1850s and 1860s. William T. Glidden and John M. S. Williams (later a Congressman) formed their partnership in 1849 and owned 50 Ships during their packet line operations. The Geo. Raynes was named for the noted Clipper Ship builder George Raynes of Portsmouth, NH. This letter is 1 page, measuring 7.75" x 9.75" with printed letterhead of "Glidden & Williams, California Packet Office, 114 State St.", having good content convening a position on the crew of the Clipper Ship "Geo. Raynes". The letter reads, in full:
"Dear Sir, --- Yours of 15th duly rec'd. The 'Geo. Raynes' will be ready for sea on Tuesday Next, so your nephew should go on, at once. He can find the Ship by calling on J. V. Baker & Co., 87 Wall St. It would be well for him to take this letter with him, to show the Captain that he has been engaged. -- Captain's name Albert Rand. -- Truly Yours, Glidden & Williams" |
