1866 “Havana Lottery of Kentucky”, 3-Item Lot, including a Printed Broadside, Printed Scam Letter from the Lottery Agents and a Stamped Envelope, Choice Very Fine.
1866 Havana Lottery of Kentucky - Group of 3 items; Stamped envelope, Broadside of Lottery “Scheme” and a Scam Promotional Letter from the Lottery Agents. The Broadside measures 8-1/2" x 8-1/4" and lists the "Scheme" or prizes to be awarded in the drawing to be held at Covington, Ky. On April 30, 1866, with a top prize of $40,000, as well as a description of how the lotter drawing will be conducted.
An accompanying Letter shows some wear, measures 8-1/2" x 11", with letterhead of "W. W. Leach & Co., U.S. Licensed Lottery Agents New York", printed in cursive type to resemble a hand-written letter, and is a con-artist scam, promising that if the recipient will send $10 for a package of tickets, they will send a prize of a few thousand dollars so that the recipient can show the money to his friends and acquaintances, which will encourage others to buy tickets.
The language of the letter is intended to make the potential victim of the scam think he has been personally selected for this opportunity, and urges him to keep the offer strictly private and confidential.
